During your MRI scan appointment
Before your scan, you will be asked whether you have any metal in your body, such as joint replacements, metal plates or injuries which may have resulted in metal fragments being left in your body. You will also be asked about certain medical conditions, recent surgeries and allergies. You will be asked to remove any metal items such as belt buckles and jewelry, and you may need to change into a gown to make sure your clothing doesn’t interfere with the scan. Some MRI scans use a contrast dye containing gadolinium. If your scan requires contrast then a technologist or doctor will insert an intravenous line into a vein in your hand or arm which will be used to inject the contrast.
You will lie on a padded bed that slides into a tunnel. It is important to remain still during the scan. Bolsters and straps may be used to help you stay still. The scan typically lasts between 15 and 60 minutes. MRI scans are painless, however, some patients feel claustrophobic while in the scanner and others find it uncomfortable to remain still during the scan. You will be provided with earplugs to reduce the loud clanking noises which occur during the scan. If your scan required contrast, the technologist will remove your intravenous line and apply a small dressing.
